This month DW is featuring an employee build by David Hull, one of our Production Techs, a modified 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX. 2002 marked the first year the WRX was available in the US. It came with a turbocharged 2.0L flat-4 engine, making just under 230-horsepower.
David’s WRX is far from stock and has quite the impressive modification list. Under the hood is a Built EJ205 open deck 2.0L with a Blouch Dominator 4.0XTR Turbo and 3” inch Invidia turbo back race exhaust. With the bigger turbo comes a need for an upgraded fuel system. David started at the fuel pump and replaced the stock pump with a DW400, our highest flowing in-tank fuel pump, giving him the ability to crank the power to as much as the engine can handle. A DWFF70 in-line fuel filter was installed for added protection against fuel contaminants, especially since is running on E85. The stock fuel rails were replaced with our DW Top Feed Fuel Rails, made specifically for the Impreza, paired with DW 1500cc injectors and DWR1000 Fuel Pressure Regulator.
David recently had the WRX re-tuned on E85 using Haltech ECU management by Ben West of Oklahoma City. On 30psi, it put down north of 530 all-wheel horsepower through his JDM V7 STi 6-speed transmission, doubling the platforms stock horsepower numbers and then some. Those are some healthy numbers for a daily driven and raced WRX.
