Our testing uncovered the need for a higher flow injector to handle the increased power of the 2016 Cobra Jet engine.  We evaluated several different injectors and decided on the Deatschwerks 95lb injector.  These injectors provide the quality we demand and the delivery we need for the 2016 Cobra Jet engine. Deatschwerks provided great support throughout the development process and we’re happy to have them on board the 2016 CJ program”

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 3, 2015 –Ford Performance proudly unveiled the 2016 Cobra Jet Mustang today at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, marking the continued evolution of the Cobra Jet as a limited edition, factory-produced turnkey race car.

The 2016 Cobra Jet, like its predecessors, is a factory-built race car that is legal for NHRA-Stock and Super Stock drag racing as well as several classes in IHRA, NMRA, and NMCA. Like prior models the 2016 Cobra Jet is limited to only 50 units, making it among the most collectible Mustangs ever. 

Since its victorious introduction at the NHRA Winternationals in 1968, Ford’s Cobra Jet Mustang has created a legacy of power, performance and triumph. The modern Cobra Jet program started with 50 cars in the 2008 model year. The program has continued with limited 50 unit builds in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. For 2016, the car is available in Oxford White or Deep Impact Blue with each color limited to 25 examples, with options including the popular “Cobra” graphics and a wheelie bar.

“The modern Cobra Jet has performed for our customers and put Ford in the winner’s circle consistently since 2008,” said Dave Pericak, director of Ford Performance. “The 2016 car is the only factory 2016 Mustang with a solid axle rear suspension, and the first Cobra Jet built off the all-new Mustang introduced in 2015. We are excited to see it compete.”

The Cobra Jet engine is comprised largely of production Mustang GT components topped by a front inlet Whipple supercharger and is capable of 8-second quarter mile times as delivered.  “It was important to use production hardware wherever possible in the engine to ensure parts are readily available and reasonably priced for racers,” said Jesse Kershaw, Manager Drag Racing Parts and Competition.  “The production parts are also incredibly durable in passing our rigorous dyno and drag strip testing.”

For decades, the Mustang has been the preeminent car in many forms of racing, including drag racing. The Cobra Jet Mustang has added to that legacy with several high-profile wins including the 2015 NHRA US Nationals Super Stock Eliminator and Factory Showdown races, while also holding several track records in multiple NHRA classes. 

The 2016 Cobra Jet features many enhancements which include drag-race-specific coil-over shocks and springs, lightweight Strange Racing brakes, 8.50 certified roll cage, an Aeromotive fuel system with trunk mounted fuel cell, Corbeau FIA seats, 5-point race harnesses, and a race-prepped automatic transmission.

Ford Performance engineers were able to tap internal resources taking technology from other parts of the company and adapting them for race purposes.  For example, the Cobra Jet engine utilizes an electric water pump from the C-MAX Hybrid that allows cool-down without the engine running. The result is more consistent racing via improved management of engine temperatures. Dyno cells calibrated to simulate drag strip burn-outs and quarter-mile runs were utilized to prove out engine durability. 

With 75% of the engine components coming directly off the Ford parts shelf, the Cobra Jet utilizes highly proven parts that are durable, efficient, and well-engineered.  Additional performance parts for the Cobra Jet can be found in the Ford Performance Parts catalog.

Much like previous Ford Performance Mustang race cars, the Cobra Jet Mustang will get its start at the Flat Rock assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich. Production of the Cobra Jet is currently underway, with delivery expected in the first quarter of 2016.

The 2016 Cobra Jet is sold as a performance part without a VIN. Customers can order a Cobra Jet by submitting a placeholder order for part number M-FR500-CJ through any North American Ford dealer. The MSRP for the base car is $99,990 with optional graphics for $1995 and a wheelie bar at $1995
